Pap Smear and Cervical Screening in Calgary

Gilead Family Practice offers Pap tests and cervical screening in Calgary as part of preventive and women’s healthcare. A Pap test, sometimes called a Pap smear, checks cervical cells for changes that may need follow up.

Alberta uses different cervical screening tests depending on age, screening history and individual risk. Contact the clinic to confirm which appointment is appropriate.

What Is a Pap Test?

A Pap test collects a small sample of cells from the cervix using a brush or spatula. The sample is examined by a laboratory for cell changes. Screening is intended for people without related symptoms. It does not diagnose cancer or examine the ovaries or uterus.

If you have unusual bleeding, pelvic pain, discharge or other symptoms, tell the clinic when booking so an appropriate assessment can be arranged.

Who Should Discuss Cervical Screening?

Routine screening guidance differs by age and clinical history.

AGES 25 TO 49

Pap Test

For many average risk Albertans, a Pap test is recommended every three years. Individual recommendations may differ.

AGES 50 TO 69

HPV Cervical Screening

Eligible patients generally receive HPV based cervical screening, commonly every five years after a negative result, or at a different interval for some patients.

OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES

Individualized Advice

Screening before 25, after 69, after hysterectomy, or with previous abnormal results or immune conditions requires individual guidance.

Screening may still be relevant if you feel well, have received the HPV vaccine, have one partner, are no longer sexually active or have experienced menopause.

How to Prepare for a Pap Test

Follow any instructions provided by the clinic. When possible, choose a day without menstrual bleeding. Ask the clinic if you expect your period.

  • Avoid douching and contraceptive creams or jellies for 24 hours beforehand.
  • Avoid vaginal intercourse for 24 hours beforehand.
  • Avoid personal lubricants for 48 hours beforehand.
  • Discuss pregnancy possibility, pain, anxiety, trauma, accessibility needs or previous examination difficulties.

Symptoms Should Not Wait

If you have abnormal bleeding or symptoms, do not delay seeking assessment simply to fit a routine screening schedule. Tell reception what is happening when you call.

What Happens During Your Appointment?

01 · BEFORE

Review and preparation

Your clinician reviews screening history, symptoms and questions. You will have privacy to change and can ask for explanations.

02 · DURING

Collecting the sample

A speculum allows the cervix to be seen. A small brush or spatula collects the sample. You can ask the clinician to pause or stop at any time.

03 · AFTER

Results and follow up

Light spotting can occur. Ask how results will be communicated, when to follow up and what symptoms require earlier assessment.

Understanding Pap Test Results

A normal result means no cervical cell changes were identified in the sample. An unsatisfactory result means the sample could not be interpreted and usually needs repeating. An abnormal result means changes were found, but does not necessarily mean cancer.

Follow up depends on the result, HPV findings, age and previous screening history. A clinician may recommend repeat testing, HPV testing, colposcopy or another assessment.

A Pap Test Is Not an STI Test

A Pap test checks for cervical cell changes. It does not test for every sexually transmitted infection. Ask the clinic about separate STI testing if you have symptoms, possible exposure or concerns.

Confidential and Inclusive Care

People of any gender identity who have a cervix may need screening. Tell the clinic about accessibility needs or preferences when booking.
